Flamingoes at the Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau, Camargue, Southern France
Flamingos used to be a common sight in the shallow “étangs” (ponds) that parallel the French Mediterranean coast between Marseille and Béziers. However, today many of these ponds and wetlands are drained to make room for yet another seaside resort. Greater colonies of flamingos can today only be found in parks and reserves, like the Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau.
